Time for Tights!!

The smell of fall in the air today got me all mixed up! I'm sad that summer is taking leave of us but that crispness got me all giddy inside. Time for boots and colorful twisty scarves. Hats perched on the backs of heads and hands tightly grasping hot coffee cups to stay warm. Oh, and tights! Are tights not the best fall accessory? If you don't think so feel free to argue with me in the comments section but nothing takes the most drab of outfits and turns it around like fabulous legwear!

We just got a HUGE shipment of tights from Hue and we are drooling! Stop by Flirt this weekend to stock up!

Classes & Parties at Home Ec

As many of you know, Home Ec, our studio space on 3rd Avenue, offers a variety of sewing classes as well as being the place where we make our own clothing line "Flirt" for our boutique on 5th Avenue in Park Slope. But did you know that we also host private parties and group classes? Well then, I suggest you read on...

Recently we held a bridal-shower-quilting-party, where the bride, her family and friends got together to celebrate, hangout and make a quilt. Every guest got their own quilt square to decorate with stitches, applique, buttons and a wide variety of beautiful fabrics to choose from. You don't need any sewing experience for this party; just a lot of imagination and some festive, creative spirit!

Once the cheese plate and the wine supply disappear and everyone has completed a square for the quilt, our Home Ec seamstresses sew it all together and the bride is presented with a beautiful, one-of-a-kind masterpiece: a quilt lovingly made by her friends and family.

In other, educational news, we have been hosting groups of teens for week long sewing camps. Our students learn how to make a cotton tote bag, a custom skirt and then get to use their new found sewing knowledge to develop a small project of their own!

If you are interested in booking a private party or class, you can always email us at flirtbrooklyn(at)earthlink.net or give us a call: 718.852.2889.

To see what sewing classes we currently offer, check out our website for schedules and descriptions.

Jesse Utt

As the rain continued to pour down in Brooklyn this week the clouds parted for us at Flirt when Jesse Utt, the prolific designer behind jewelry line Zachary Pryor, stopped by to show us his newest designs.

Jesse has been selling his one-of-kind creations to Flirt for years now. The always popular, and somewhat wicked, hand-painted cuffs and earrings feature images from pop culture, nature, and the wild mind of the artist himself. Many of his urban-inspired necklaces and earrings are made from lost or forgotten vintage jewelery. Just when I'm convinced I've found my favorite piece, he reaches into his box of wares, and I am wowed by another tiny masterpiece!

Jesse began designing accessories after he put his foot through one of his favorite paintings (a depiction of his version of Queen Esther from the Bible and Ganymedes from Greek mythology). Not wanting to lose the most important part of his painting, he fashioned it into a canvas wrist cuff with some jewel snaps. On the subway and on the streets of New York, everyone would ask where he got this cuff and where they could get one. And so, Zachary Pryor, urban inspired accessories was born. Zachary, from the name his mother had wanted him to name him so badly and Pryor, from the maiden name of his most loved relative, with whom he felt a strong soul connection, his grandmother, Queva.

Shrinky Dink Jewelry by Alianna Jacqua

So, I admit it! I am having a hard time getting over the swooping bird imagery. It's out there, everyone's doing it, and still I am smitten. Show me a bird in flight and I'm over the moon. So when designer Alianna Jaqua strolled into Flirt the other day with this pendant, needless to say, I was in love. I wish I could have gotten a better shot of the white one (below) because it is awesome and pure white and is the perfect thing to wear with a simple tank dress on the hottest of days.

She makes them from shrink plastic, or, for those of us who remember, the same material used for that favorite childhood past time, Shrinky Dinks! Of course, in my plastic baking days, I never made a Shrinky Dink that looked like that!

Or like these:

Each one is done by hand so each is a one-of-a-kind. Earrings range from $28-$34 and necklaces are $38 and are available at Flirt on 5th Ave!

We LOVE Elsie Q.

There are a few designers we'd really like to get inside the mind of and top on everyone's list at Flirt is Angela Smith of Elsie Q. We never know what we're going to see when she comes in. She is always full of surprises! Sometimes it's tea towels with grizzly bears or billiard tables, sometimes tshirts with goldfish and googly eyes, and sometimes, when the stars perfectly align, there are Wiener Dogs. . .

Yes, Weiner Dogs. These amazing little guys are lovingly created by Angela from scraps of felt and flannel and you can't look at them without grinning. They are so colorful we couldn't help but put them all over the shop!

Of course Angela isn't limited to the canine variety of handmade delights. No, no, no!!! There are crocheted octopi and knitted teapots, too!

In addition to these adorable creatures Angela produces silkscreened tshirts and home goods, dresses, bags, and much more.

What we love most about Angela is her willingness to infuse everything she makes with a lot of color and a little humor. For more Elsie Q. items stop by Flirt!
