Fall Shoes Are Arriving At Flirt

We just received our first shipment of fall shoes from Jeffrey Campbell and are we in love! It's booties and kitten heels everywhere this season and we are not immune to the trends. We love the thought of the Way Out cut-out with bright blue tights and the studded Dino bootie with a pair of pencil leggings. And this is just the beginning of fall my dear flirty friends so keep your eyes open for more fantastic boots and shoes coming in the next few weeks!

Time for Tights!!

The smell of fall in the air today got me all mixed up! I'm sad that summer is taking leave of us but that crispness got me all giddy inside. Time for boots and colorful twisty scarves. Hats perched on the backs of heads and hands tightly grasping hot coffee cups to stay warm. Oh, and tights! Are tights not the best fall accessory? If you don't think so feel free to argue with me in the comments section but nothing takes the most drab of outfits and turns it around like fabulous legwear!

Jesse Utt

As the rain continued to pour down in Brooklyn this week the clouds parted for us at Flirt when Jesse Utt, the prolific designer behind jewelry line Zachary Pryor, stopped by to show us his newest designs.


Jesse has been selling his one-of-kind creations to Flirt for years now. The always popular, and somewhat wicked, hand-painted cuffs and earrings feature images from pop culture, nature, and the wild mind of the artist himself. Many of his urban-inspired necklaces and earrings are made from lost or forgotten vintage jewelery. Just when I'm convinced I've found my favorite piece, he reaches into his box of wares, and I am wowed by another tiny masterpiece!

Jesse began designing accessories after he put his foot through one of his favorite paintings (a depiction of his version of Queen Esther from the Bible and Ganymedes from Greek mythology). Not wanting to lose the most important part of his painting, he fashioned it into a canvas wrist cuff with some jewel snaps. On the subway and on the streets of New York, everyone would ask where he got this cuff and where they could get one. And so, Zachary Pryor, urban inspired accessories was born. Zachary, from the name his mother had wanted him to name him so badly and Pryor, from the maiden name of his most loved relative, with whom he felt a strong soul connection, his grandmother, Queva.

Flirt Gets Green at the Grand Army Farmer's Market

So we make clothing. And what happens when you make clothing? You make fabric scraps. Lots and lots of fabric scraps. We don't want to throw them away because, to be honest, it's wasteful and some of them are big enough for small projects but they pile up faster than we can quilt them. So we keep them.

Here is just a fraction of what we wind up with:

Recently Patti did a little research and found that, indeed, there is a place that recycles fabric scraps and it's close by. So this Saturday morning she staggered over to Grand Army Plaza carrying two huge Ikea bags (oh Ikea bags, we love you) filled with scraps and scraps of fabric.

What a relief to get rid of all those little pieces without having to add to any landfills. They not only accept fabric but also clothing, shoes, bedding, linens, hats, handbags, and belts. So if you have clothing, shoes, or fabric you just don't know what to do with lug it over to Grand Army Plaza next Saturday. And we all know what more closet space allows for. . .more clothing, shoes, and fabric, of course.

Sewing Classes This Weekend

As many of you know, Flirt offers a variety of sewing classes at our studio space, Home Ec, located at 303 3rd Avenue.




This weekend, we will be finishing up the final session of our Skirt Making Class and teaching a Build A Bag Workshop. Space is still available for Build A Bag, and sign up is easy through our website. No previous sewing knowledge or experience necessary!

New "Sweet Nothings" from In God We Trust

Many of you are familiar with these naughty little necklaces from Brooklyn based In God We Trust known to those in the know as "Sweet Nothings". Be you sugar and spice or salt and sassafras there is a little brass heart with you written all over it! Classic favorites like Bless This Mess and Balls To The Wall now share display space at Flirt with our new obsessions: Willing and Able and, yes, Stuff My Muff (I can't even type it without smirking). If these seem too tawdry for you there are sweeter Sweet Nothings but interestingly enough it seems most times the naughtier the better.

We're Back! And Better This Time!

Hello all you wonderful Flirtsters! If you are here at our blog, if you even bother checking it anymore considering the last time we actually had a post, then you’ve been perusing the website and hopefully hitting up the our new web-boutique. If you want to go to the store click here! There are so many great new things for spring/summer and more to come on an almost daily basis so keep checking back.

So. . . much to tell. So much has been happening in the world of Flirt since last we met so I won’t go into all of it but I’ll give you a rundown of 2008:

Flirt Smith Street, our original store where the dream of retail independence was born, closed in June of this year. Developers were interested in the property and to ensure the sale they wanted to deliver the buildings vacant so it was so-long Flirt, hello empty storefronts for the last 8 months. I can’t tell you how sad it was to take everything off the shelves. We miss Smith Street and our loyal customers terribly. But we often see those familiar faces at Flirt in Park Slope which is really flattering and wonderful!

Classes have continued at Home Ec and we’ve gotten some really great press as a result. Most recently an article in Page Six magazine where Patti and our most awesome seamstress/retail master Emily G. were quoted. Classes are really filling up every weekend and last weekend we had two full Build a Bag Workshops. We just added more sessions of Build a Bag, Flirt Skirt class, and Altered States which is a class conceived by the most awesome of makers Cal Patch where you can learn how to be your own tailor! If you’ve been thinking about picking up sewing now is the time!

And speaking of Home Ec. . . at the end of 2008, right before Christmas, we decided to embark on one of our other dreams of opening a home store a la Flirt with a great mix of contemporary, handmade, vintage, and vintage inspired home goods. We also have fabric and notions and even some amazing furniture. Here’s what it looks like:
















Of course, as I’m sure you said to yourself, it might now have been the greatest time to start a new retail adventure. . . especially on 3rd Avenue which is a bit off the beaten path. But we don’t let things go easily and knew we just had to figure out a way to get people through the doors. And what really brings people out of the woodwork? Big, gigantic sales! After almost ten years in business you have a lot of left over stuff. Clothes, shoes, jewelry, bags, hats, tshirts. You name it we’ve probably got it and you know what we do with it when it’s out of season? We store it. So we figured everyone likes a super sale. Why not just have one ongoing. So every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday we do from 12-6pm and it’s been great. So you should check this blog regularly for updates about what’s new not only at Flirt and Flirt online but also at our overstock sale.

So we’re back! And this time I promise updates about new merchandise, classes, and happenings. Trust me!
